ERIN
One of the seven main characters in the Chronicles series.
BACKGROUND - Erin has spent all his life being raised in a monastery school for orphans near the town of Pora, by the Angellenic Sea, in the Kingdom of Irithia. Erin is not aware of having any family.
Encouraged to question, as part of his training for the powerful Order of Omicron, Erin has recently begun to find his faith lacking. Although raised all his life towards a religious career, the nearer he reaches to his Presentation and hopeful Ordination, the more he doubts both himself and his future.
Erin reveals that he had, in the past year, formed a close relationship with a young woman from Pora, but left her to pursue his religious vocation, a decision he is now unsure was correct. Parting with her, an event she reacted bitterly to, Erin is now resolved to face whatever his future may hold, all with a growing sense of resigned trepidation.
GATHERING - When we meet first with Erin, he is an inexperienced eighteen-year-old acolyte travelling to the city of Corianth for his Presentation and hopeful Ordination. Caught in the same pouring storm that has afflicted Sirath and Ulric, he sees Sirath from a distance in the rain, and that is how Erin is lead to the shelter of the cave Ulric sits within. Despite Sirath's objections and calls for Erin to be ejected to face the force of the elements, Ulricand Jerith both invite him in, and from that moment are constantly protective of him, despite Sirath's grumblings.
Joining up with the group, as much for safety as for anything else, Erin reluctantly enters the pay of Councillor Amberlin after his purse is stolen. Working now with the others, their inspections of the city Workhouses only serve to increase Erin's self doubt, anxiety, and growing confusion as he recoils in horror from the poverty he witnesses. With a growing sense of helplessness, Erin realises the naivety of his upbringing and all the squalor he has been kept from viewing, vowing to change all that he sees that needs righting if he can. For the moment, however, keeping any sense of normality to his life, and even surviving, becomes a surprisingly difficult challenge.
RELATIONSHIPS - Erin has a particularly bad rapport with Sirath, and Sirath never fails to point out Erin's failing's, particularly with regards to his lack of life experience. Then again, Sirath barely feels the need for excuse to make jibes and stabbing comments at Erin, though Erin stands them patiently and as best he resignedly can. Ulric, however, treats Erin with a friendly respect, and is particularly vociferous about rescuing Erin after his false imprisonment. Jerith is also as encouraging as can be, and Erin also finds that Jerith's education makes stimulating, if not entirely agreeable, conversation. Tilrion is as distant with Erin as he is to everyone else, and like most of the others, Erin regards Ezebekial uncomfortably. As for Dalathos, Erin at first finds some measure of respect from him, even though Dalathos publicly states his disliking for religion. However, during the attempted rescue of Erin from the Cardinals Detention Centre, Dalathos misinterprets Erin's fears and apprehensions as ingratitude, the consequence of which seriously damages their relationship.
ANTI-CHARACTER - Erin's anti-character is Siyat Bren, and there is such a very close association to their fortunes as to be near parallel. Both have travelled to the city of Corianth with feelings of trepidation, both have a place for children in their lives (though Erin's real concern is juxtaposed with Siyat's blatant paedophilia), both suffer beatings and imprisonment, as well as attempted decapitation. |
