KING

Ruler of a designated kingdom, the kings of the Corianth Empire are automatically members of the Palantine Confederation, a special imperial commonwealth designed to help keep the empire together by the will of the majority. However, it has repeatedly failed to prevent small kingdoms being swallowed by larger, and large kingdoms from fragmenting. It also failed miserably during the time of the Broken Empire.

Kings rule client kingdoms, being any kingdom within the sphere of the Corianth Empire, and although all kings are expected to institute the charters and commands of the Emperor himself, kings otherwise have a wide range of powers within their own boundaries.

Generally, the kings have gradually increased their powers against the authority of the Emperor over the centuries, so that they are no longer the client states of Sephis' design, and now quite autonomous.

Kings are allowed to raise armies to protect their boundaries, and may also grant the title of Lord upon the subjects of their choice, designating them according to the five-rank system, and granting lands and fief in accordance with such titles.

A number of kings are mentioned in the first volume, notably Abedican III, Dreyfarius, Lithos, Narrah II, Nicepheros Comas, Orrios, Perinios VII.
