POLITICS

The Corianth Empire is an imperial commonwealth, with the Emperor as its head of state, presiding over a number of semi-autonomous kingdoms which have gradually eroded imperial power for their own gain.

The kingdoms themselves within the Corianth Empire are not static entities, but in continual flux, as border disputes, strife over succession, and periodic uprisings, habitually cause the redrawing of royal boundaries.

When Emperor Sephis I reigned over the Corianth Empire, there were originally thirty-eight designated kingdoms, and despite the absorption and disintegration of a number, particularly during the time of the Broken Empire (325-398 LC) there are now sixty-three.

Despite the ever growing autonomy in the kingdoms of empire, the Emperor himself is still far more powerful than a mere constitutional monarch, having not simply the capital city of Corianth under his direct rule, but also those regions known as the Inner Kingdoms. Although the city of Corianth does have a city council, and the Inner Kingdoms have regents titled as kings, they are very much under full imperial authority.

Also, the reigning Emperor is the head of the Palantine Confederation, an internal political body representing the largest and most powerful kingdoms, who see it as being in their interests to encourage stability within the empire wherever it may be threatened.
