TILRION
One of the seven main characters in the series.
BACKGROUND - Tilrion is a twin with Jerith, and both of them were born to a family of the minor nobility landed in Irithia. However, when they were both four years old their father was murdered and their house burned by political enemies, leaving them homeless with their distraught mother. Although able to take shelter with relatives outside of that kingdom, the brothers found no permanent roof. Then, at the age of twelve, their mother died, leaving them more fully alone. Tilrion and Jerith then parted to go their separate ways, staying with family associates who provided each brother with some minimal financial support.
However, as an important point of note, Tilrion was still inside the house during the fire that killed his father, suffering terrible burns to his back and head. As a consequence, Tilrion now covers himself with deeply hooded red robes that mostly hide his face, his scars, and with it, any physical resemblance to Jerith.
GATHERING - We soon learn that before the beginning of this volume, Tilrion was in the Kingdom of Castea, working with a local marshal concerned about the theft of horses from Councillor Amberlin's estates. Just before that marshal died, from a tumour of the kidneys, Tilrion was sent to the city of Corianth bearing a note for the councillor, informing him of the situation. Tilrion is well aware of the contents, and that they advise Councillor Amberlin to hire men to protect his herds. Tilrion has therefore sent out a message to Jerith stating the potential for employment if money is short, and asking to meet at a pre-arranged place. Although Jerith turns up, late, and with uninvited company at that, Councillor Amberlin now has greater concerns than simple horse rustling.
RELATIONSHIPS - Tilrion is neither charismatic like his brother, nor concerned with social niceties. He does not care to make friends, and finds his brother's laid back and playful attitude to be annoying, even frustrating. Tilrion is openly displeased with Jerith for offering the suggested employment to the other main characters, merely because as he full well knows, the work is not guaranteed, merely potential. Tilrion and Jerith therefore do not get along very well. Neither does Tilrion make any particular effort to become close with anyone else in the group, although he is never actually unfriendly. Cold and seeming emotionless, Dalathos is the only one who pays Tilrion any particular close attention, especially after Tilrion recounts the past troubles of the Corianth Empire, and those tribulations brewing in their own times. And although Dalathos, and Ulric, would be regarded as the warriors among the group, neither is as dangerous as Tilrion in a bad mood. It is fortunate for most that Tilrion reserves his rage and deadly style of fighting for those who would threaten others. Tilrion is aware of Jerith's future.
ANTI-CHARACTER - The anti-character to the twins Tilrion and Jerith are the Panater-Arios twins Eirron and Darrion, where Eirron is Tilrion's negative version. They are, of course, quite opposite in many respects, not least regarding the fact that Eirron lacks self control in his aggression, whereas Tilrion is supremely disciplined, and all the more deadly for it. |
